Norman was born in Southend-on-Sea in 1924 and grew up in Dover.
During the war, he was a student at Tunbridge Wells School of Art. He gained a Royal Scholarship to study in the Engraving School at the Royal College of Art which he took up after war service in the Royal Navy.
He taught at Leeds College of Art from 1949 and retired in 1985 from his position as Senior Lecturer in Etching and Engraving in the School of Creative Arts and Design at Leeds Polytechnic.
Norman was elected an Associate of the Royal Society of Painter Etchers and Engravers in 1951, becoming a Fellow in 1973 and Senior Fellow in 1994. He was also elected an Associate of the Royal Watercolour Society in 1966, becoming a Fellow in 1975 and Senior Fellow in 1994.
Apart from exhibiting regularly at the RWS and the RE, he has had several one-man shows and has exhibited in numerous group and mixed exhibitions. Many of his etchings and watercolours have been exhibited at the Royal Academy summer exhibition and have been bought for permanent collections.
