ARTIST PROFILE

John Boyd

John Boyd - Photographer

John is Leeds born and bred but he also has a great affinity with the whole of West Yorkshire, especially through his broadcasting career.

He began on BBC local radio before moving to commercial radio in the early 80s. He’s now back with the BBC at Radio Leeds where he presents his own programme each weekday between 9am and 12 noon. John also presents the Sunday afternoon Rugby League programme and is often seen on the TV on the Saturday edition of Look North.

Away from the studios, John is an avid photographer and rarely leaves the house without his camera. He’s very much a Canon man since he acquired a T70 many years ago. Nowadays, he’s packing a D60 and a 20D so you can tell he’s gone digital!

‘It suits my style’ he says. ‘I just don’t have the patience to wait for slides and prints to return from the lab. With digital, I can do it all myself.’ The only concession he makes to film is with a 6cm x 6cm Yashica Mat 124G so any square images you see will most probably have come from this lovely old camera.

Apart from still trying to play golf (he’s off a handicap of 13 at the Leeds Golf Centre at Wike Ridge) he walks his lurcher Bonnie most days of the week. It’s when he’s out and about with the dog that John often sees scenes that deserve to be committed to posterity through the lens of his camera.

His portfolio includes many favourite scenes from Yorkshire but also extends to international images captured during his extensive travels throughout Europe and the USA.
